Visa Descriptions

Temporary visas are nonimmigrant visas for aliens to enter the U.S. for a temporary period of time. The alien is subject to the restrictions pursuant to the visa description. Temporary employment visas allow the alien to work in the U.S. for the sponsoring company.

Permanent residency allows an individual to permanently reside and work in the U.S. Lawful permanent residency can be obtained via employment, direct investment, family relationship, asylum and the green card lottery.

For some categories of family and work based visas intending immigrants or non immigrants must wait in line for there "priority date". This is because the number of intending visa participants is greater than the numbers that are statutorily permitted.

The U.S. Department of State publishes a "visa bulletin" which gives a fair estimate of the waiting period. Reading it is not straightforward but with alittle practice...
